Story - Cheltenham Council cuts Festival Funding

Congratulations
to Cheltenham Borough Council on
exceeding any limits of stupidity that we might previously
have attributed to them.
Dispite being a vital ingredient to the tourism
economy for many in the area, the council have cut
funding to the town's festivals.
The
internationally aclaimed Jazz, Folk, Literature, Music
and Science festivals which attract many thousands of visitors
from around the world, are all under threat. In
the past, just under £500k
has been available to the festivals, but the Cabinet has
agreed to slash funding by £80k in
5 years.
Never
mind, if we take the optimistic view of Councilor Rowena
Hay, Lib Dem, Warden Hill), who advises, "This
will enable them to look for other funding".
Yeah... Right...
Tell you what Councilor,
if there is any way that the Festivals can avoid generating
revenue for your own grubby little paws, I hope it can
be found.
I doubt it though. I can't see you giving back to the
festival the monies that you raise through your excessive
parking charges.

Funding CutThe
council could well do with reading their own document,
"Cheltenham’s Cultural Strategy
2002 to 2006" in which they acknowledge,
"...it is the core annual events of Music and Fringe,
Jazz, Folk, Competitive Arts, Cricket and Literature
Festivals;... which help to make Cheltenham unique.
People
come to Cheltenham because there are high-quality cultural
events and a fine supporting restaurant & cafe culture. Not
because of the Councilors.
